A family splintered by love and fear... an empire torn by treachery
-----------------------------------------------
Charles stood paralysed on the marble stairway. He heard Phyllis screaming, over and over. He saw the huddled figure, motionless, face down, a broken body in rumpled black. He gripped the balustrade and watched Phyllis running down the stairs. He saw her kneeling beside the body, her violet gown spread all about her. She was still screaming.
Jochen looked at the man near his feet.
Then, very slowly, he lifted his eyes to Charles.
»So, that's how you settled it." he said.

SATURDAY REVIEW
In The Beautiful is Vanished, Taylor Caldwell returns to an earlier theme. Like the Barbours in Dynasty of Death, the Wittmanns are armament manufacturers. Charles, eldest of four brothers and head of the Wittmann Machine Tool Company, towers over the organisation.

To these Charles can show no sentiment. He must preserve his strength to preserve justice.
All his deep affections are reserved for his son Jimmy, and for Wilhelm's wife, Phyllis, whom conscience forbids him to love: two people who bring him joy and pain in equal measure...
